In an attempt to rectify historical injustices within their country Kenya has approved a Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission to investigate human rights violations.
The decision made by the Kenyan parliament was spurred by the recent debate on how to handle those responsible for the violence that dominated the recent 2007 December elections. An estimated 1,500 people were killed during the election and more than 300,000 were forced to flee from their homes.
With the institution of a TJRC all crimes committed since 1963, Kenya’s independence, up to February 2008 will be investigated.
Those found guilty of crimes will not be granted immunity as the general feeling is such an act would only encourage future violence.
The scope of the investigation dates back to 1963 in large part because much of the violence during the recent election is believed to have been caused by longstanding injustices that were never resolved.
In February a power-sharing deal was signed that left Mwai Kibaki as president and Raila Odinga as Kenya’s prime minister.
