The execution of convicted cop killer Troy Davis has been suspended for 25 days after the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued a stay.
Davis was scheduled to be executed on Monday for the killing of Savannah, Ga. police officer Mark MacPhail in 1989. The 39-year-old was convicted of the murder in 1991 and sentenced to die despite no physical evidence that tied him to the murder.
Davis has maintained his innocence and since his conviction several of the witnesses that testified against him have recanted their statements.
The case against Davis has been a rallying point for Amnesty International who has pled for a new case with all the new evidence supporting his innocence. Friday’s decision by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals comes just after the Supreme Court rejected an appeal from Davis.
