Mayor of Georgian Town Killed in Explosion

Gia Mebonia, mayor of the Georgian town Muzhava, was killed in an explosion Friday night in what officials are calling an attack by neighboring Abkhazia separatists.

The blast left two other people injured but Muzhava is believed to be the only one killed.

Investigators found an antenna near the bomb site leaving them to believe the explosive was remotely controlled but that has not been verified.

It has been more than two months since the Georgian breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia were at the center of a war between Russia and Georgia. After Georgia entered South Ossetia to in an attempt to reclaim the territory Russia responded by sending troops to protect the separatists.

After the fighting stopped Russia left troops in South Ossetia and Abkhazia and formally recognized their independence from Georgia. Tension between the two regions and Georgia has persisted and it is believed Friday’s blast was tied to that animosity.
