The 2008 World Series shifts to Philadelphia on Saturday night as the Phillies host the Tampa Bay Rays in Game Three after splitting the opening two games in Florida. While questions about the weather have dominated the conversation just as many questions remain concerning the offense of the Phillies as they have struggled to produce with runners in scoring position and their sparkplug, leadoff hitter Jimmy Rollins, remains hitless in the best-of-seven series.
Philadelphia will be going with 45-year-old lefty Jamie Moyer (16-7 3.71 ERA) on Saturday night and Phillies fans will be hoping it is the regular season Moyer that shows up rather than the postseason Moyer. In his two postseason games Moyer has gone 0-2 with a 13.5 ERA, his last start against the Los Angeles Dodgers he lasted 1 1/3 innings while allowing six runs on six hits.
Prior to the postseason Moyer won his last six decisions, not allowing more than three runs in those games. Perhaps even more surprising to Phillies fans is the fact both postseason losses came on the road, in the regular season he posted a 10-3 record away from Philly. In interleague play the lefty was 1-3 this year.
As for the Rays, they’ll be sending Matt Garza (11-9 3.70 ERA) to the hill in his first start since tossing a masterpiece against the Boston Red Sox in Game Seven of the ALCS. Garza was named ALCS MVP after collecting two wins while allowing just two runs in 13 innings. After struggling a bit down the stretch of the regular season the hard throwing right hander appears to have found his form.
Garza struggled a bit on the road during the regular season, going 4-6 and was 2-1 in interleague play. While Garza is known as a power pitcher he’ll have to mix his speeds against a Phillies line-up that is certainly capable of catching up to his fastball.
While Philadelphia has out-hit Tampa in the series,17-12, the timing of those hits has been nothing short of awful as they are 1-28 with runners in scoring position. Rollins has put together an 0-10 series while Pat Burrell is stuck in an 0-6 slump. On the bright side Ryan Howard may have swung his way out of an ugly postseason slump after collecting pair of hits in Game Two.
Tampa hitters know plenty about struggling as well though as Carlos Pena, Evan Longoria and Carl Crawford are a combined 0-22 in the World Series.
