Colt McCoy was 38/45 passing for 391 yards and two touchdowns, Jordan Shipley had 168 yards receiving and a TD and the #1 Texas Longhorns (8-0, 4-0) rolled up 504 yards of total offense but had to hang on for dear life at the end to knock off the #7 Oklahoma State Cowboys (7-1, 3-1) 28-24 in a key Big 12 showdown on Saturday.
The Longhorns built a 14-0 lead in the first half with a McCoy to Shipley 14-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and a 14-yard touchdown run from Vondrell McGee early in the second quarter but Kendall Hunter put the Cowboys on the board with a 23-yard touchdown run to cut Oklahoma State’s deficit to 14-7. McCoy answered for the Longhorns with another TD toss, hitting Quan Cosby on a 17-yarder with just over four minutes left in the half but Zac Robinson brought the Cowboys down the field and hit Bo Bowling on a 9-yard touchdown pass to head into the half trailing 21-14.
McCoy put the Longhorns in front 28-14 in the third quarter on a 3-yard run but Oklahoma State continued to battle and found the endzone once again on a Keith Toston one-yard run to put the score at 28-21 going into the fourth quarter.
Dan Bailey then booted a 39-yard field goal to get the Cowboys within 28-24 early in the fourth and it looked like Oklahoma State was building momentum against the Longhorns. They then forced a McCoy fumble and took over deep in their own territory but fell short on a fourth down. Their defense stepped up once again and stopped the Longhorns on a fourth and goal and when their offense took over they had 33 seconds left on the clock and 99 yards to go.
They managed to get just past the 50-yard-line but Robinson’s final toss fell short of the endzone and was knocked down by Texas to lock up the game.
Texas will travel to Texas Tech next week while the Oklahoma State Cowboys host Iowa State.
