BCS Rankings Released Week 9: Texas Longhorns Remain #1, Alabama Crimson Tide Hold #2 Spot

The Texas Longhorns held on to their #1 spot in the latest edition of the BCS rankings on Sunday while the Alabama Crimson Tide held firm to the #2 spot in what could shake out to be a very close battle for who earns the right to fight for the National Championship in Miami on Jan. 8.

While the Crimson Tide are at #2 the Penn State Nittany Lions closed the gap with a big win over the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday but with no real marquee games left and the Big Ten lacking a championship game they may need a loss by Texas or Alabama to get to the BCS title game.

The Oklahoma Sooners are sitting at #4 in the BCS but are in the tough Big 12 and could find themselves on the outside looking in because it’s looking unlikely that they will make the conference championship game.

With their win over the Arizona Wildcats on Saturday the USC Trojans held on to their #5 spot in the BCS and are expected to win-out which could get them into the BCS championship game as those in front of them still have a long road ahead.

Sitting at #6 are the Georgia Bulldogs who went into Baton Rouge and knocked off the LSU Tiger sand with a win next week against the Florida Gators could bolster their position in the BCS title race. A win could set up a showdown with the Alabama Crimson Tide in the SEC championship game and a chance to avenge their only loss thus far.

Texas Tech moved up to #7 after blasting Kansas on Saturday and with games left against the Longhorns, Oklahoma State Cowboys and the Sooners the Red Raiders have plenty of life left in the BCS race.

The Florida Gators jumped up to #8 in this week’s BCS rankings after blasting the Kentucky Wildcats and they could continue their rise with a win next week against the Bulldogs in a key SEC showdown.
