UN Headquarters in Congo Attacked by Protesters

The UN headquarters in the Democratic Republic of Congo has come under attack by hundreds of protesters angry that the global body hasn’t provided them with better protection against rebel forces that have stepped up their offensive.

Reports of cars being damaged and windows being smashed have surfaced as the protesters have lobbed stones over the wall at the building.

The rebels, loyal to general Laurent Nkunda, have been clashing with government troops and took an army camp over the weekend. That led to thousands of residents fleeing their homes and heading towards the regional capital of Goma.

UN peacekeepers are said to be heading towards the area where rebel troops have been clashing with army troops.
