Rock and roll keyboardist Merl Saunders, who collaborated with iconic artists including Miles Davis and the Grateful dead, has died. Saunders died Friday of complications from a stroke. He was 74.
Saunders is best known for his collaboration with Grateful Dead lead guitarist and singer Jerry Garcia in the 60s and 70s. The Saunders-Garcia Band recorded two albums and played together until Garcia’s death in 1995.
“We loved him very much – and we know that you, his fans, did too. He was a special man, a beautiful companion, father, grandfather, and family patriarch, and the proof of that spirit is in the way you’ve reached out to us at his passing,” his family said in a statement.
Saunders is survived by his longtime partner, two sons and a daughter.
