Zimbabwe Power-Sharing Talks Resume in Harare, Appointment of Cabinet Posts Remain Sticking Point

The power-sharing talks between Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai resume in Harare on Monday as former South African President Thabo Mbeki once again tries to mediate the discussion that has stalled for the past six weeks.

The two sides came to an agreement in September that left Mugabe as president and placed Tsvangirai in the role of prime minister but the details have been harder to implement. According to their agreement Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party would appoint 15 cabinet posts while Tsvangirai’s MDC would have 13 posts and an MDC faction led by Arthur Mutambara would have three.

Problems arose when Mugabe announced his appointments without discussing what posts he was filling. Tsvangirai has said Mugabe targeted key posts and filled those while leaving lesser positions for the MDC party to fill.

On Saturday Tsvangirai told a group of supporters “Our commitment is to an equitable power-sharing arrangement, otherwise we are not going to be party to it and we may as well look for alternative political options.”

Tsvangirai has threatened to pull out of the power-sharing deal if the problems persist.
