With the ball in Cole Hamels hand the Philadelphia Phillies have been unstoppable this postseason. The 24-year-old lefty has won all four of his starts in the playoffs including a shutdown performance in Game One of the World Series in which he surrendered two runs in seven innings against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Now Hamels has the chance to win his fifth postseason game and hand the Philadelphia Phillies their first World Series title since 1980 and just their second in its 126 year history.
All signs look good for Philly as they not only have their ace on the hill but also have a rejuvenated offense that has battered Rays pitching over the past two games. With the offense clicking and Hamels dealing fans in Philly could be celebrating in the “City of Brotherly Love” on Monday night.
Of course the Rays would like to send the series back to Tampa and to do that they’ll need a big start from their franchises most successful pitcher, Scott Kazmir. The Game One starter looked shaky in the opener but he settled down and allowed just three runs in six innings but took the loss.
For Tampa to have a shot at Hamels they’ll not only need an outstanding performance form Kazmir but Carlos Pena and Evan Longoria need to snap out of an awful slump that has now stretched to 0-29 in the World Series. Facing Hamels in Game One wasn’t pretty for either one of the stars as Pena went 0-4 with a strikeout while Longoria was 0-4 with three Ks.
Game Five action will start at 8:00 p.m. ET on Monday night.
