Israel Facing Elections after Failure to Form Coalition Government

Israeli President Shimon Peres has said the country will likely have an election by February following the announcement by Kadima party leader Tzipi Livni that a coalition has failed to form.

Livni took the leadership position of Israel’s largest party after Ehud Olmert stepped down as prime minister following corruption charges. Olmert still maintains his innocence in the allegations.

Peres has said Israelis have lost their confidence in the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, but told the body, “it's never too late to fix things.” There will now be a three week period in which any member of the Knesset could form a coalition with the backing of a majority of the 120 MKs.

If that fails Peres will call for a General Election that would take place within 90 days, many believing a February 2009 date will be set.

Livni was credited with making an attempt to form a coalition but her party’s talks concerning the future of Jerusalem has been unpopular with other parties.
