Blizzard Creates Travel Problems in New York, New England

Travelers on the holiday weekend were stranded by the thousands due to inclement weather including snow, ice and strong winds.  Many were forced to stay in hotels and friend's or relative's homes as the conditions forced flight cancellations and other transportation problems.

The East Coast was hit the hardest, with areas predicted to get nearly two and a half feet of snow, and winds reaching 80 miles per hour in some places.

Around New York City, JFK and LaGuardia airports saw both incoming and outgoing flights suspended until the weather cleared.  Newark Liberty International Airport also saw flight suspensions as conditions worsened.  The airports are not likely to resume their scheduled flights until 4:00 p.m. on Monday afternoon.

The snow also took its toll on rail travel.  Amtrak canceled service between the Boston and New York stations and have now only resumed limited service.  The limited trains present a new problem, with many being sold out already.  10,000 passengers were affected by the lack of rail transportation.

In addition to New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Providence and Portland, Maine are also in an emergency state due to snow.
