Italian authorities say a suspicious package found at the Greek Embassy in Rome on Monday contained an explosive. Police are currently investigating whether suspicious packages at the Venezuelan and Danish embassies contain explosives.
Monday’s discovery comes 4 days after parcel bombs exploded at two other embassies in Rome. The first explosion occurred at the Swiss Embassy and the second occurred at the Chilean Embassy. One person was injured in each blast. The attacks prompted authorities to launch a city-wide inspection of embassies.
"The alarm system has worked. Since this morning, all the embassies that had a suspected package alerted the police in enough time to determine whether the packages were dangerous and prevent any injuries,” Francesco Tagliente, the chief of police in Rome, said Monday.
In computer written notes attached to last week’s package bombs, the Informal Federation of Anarchists claimed responsibility for the explosions at the Swiss and Chilean embassies. “We have decided to make our voices heard again, in words and deeds. We will destroy the system of domination,” the messages read.
Tagliente said the explosives discovered today are “certainly related” to last week’s attacks.
