According to Sudan’s foreign ministry five of the nine Chinese oil workers held captive by Sudanese rebels have been killed while another two escaped and two remain held.
The Chinese oil workers, along with two drivers, were kidnapped in Sudan’s southern state of Kordofan last Saturday. The rebels released on of the drivers with a note declaring they wanted a share of the money coming from oil profits in the region in exchange for the Chinese oil workers.
The abductors, believed to be Darfur rebels, have accused China of supporting the Sudanese government through the oil fields in which they have invested. The Chinese men abducted were working for the China National Petroleum Corporation.
The two that escaped were wounded and the status of the two remaining held is unknown.
