Video: Mike Singletary Rants About Vernon Davis During 49ers Press Conference
San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary blasted star tight end Vernon Davis in his postgame press conference on Sunday.
Singletary, the first-time head coach, apologized to the 49ers fans during the press conference for the team's performance in their 34-14 loss to their NFC West rivals, the Seattle Seahawks.
Singletary was highly disappointed in his team, especially Davis, his starting tight end, in his first game as the new head coach for the 49ers. Mike Nolan was fired last week and Singletary was promoted as the interim coach.
During the third quarter, Davis got a personal foul for slapping a Seattle player's helmet and then nonchalantly acted like nothing was wrong when he got back to the sidelines. Singletary then made a staunch statement and ordered Davis off the field and into the locker room.
"I will not tolerate players that think it's about them when it's about the team," Singletary said in the news conference. "We cannot make decisions that cost the team, and then come off the sideline and it's nonchalant. No. I'd rather play with 10 people and just get penalized all the way until we have to do something else rather than play with 11 when I know that right now that person is not sold out to be a part of this team."
Singletary yelled in front of his teammates, demanding that Davis sit on the bench and then ordered him to the locker room at the next timeout.
"I told him that he would do a better job for us right now taking a shower and coming back and watching the game than going out on the field, simple as that," Singletary said.
"I don't think I did anything wrong," Davis said. "If the coach thinks I did something wrong, I have to listen to him. He's the boss."
"I didn't know what was going on," continued Davis, who attempted to speak to Singletary after the game. "I already know about Coach Singletary. He wants to win, and he's a hard-working guy. He won't tolerate anything."
