A Town Hall meeting on over-the-counter cough syrup and medicine abuse was held October 23rd in Hapeville, Georgia. The meeting, sponsored by Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA), The Genesis Coalition, and The Consumer Healthcare Products Association, (CHPA), was well attended by local community groups, teachers, church groups, and Narconon Drug Rehab of Georgia.
“We are happy to join the nationwide effort that combats this substance abuse trend,” comments Mr. Gordon Weinand, Public Relations for Narconon Drug Rehab in Georgia. “It is estimated that 2.4 million teens have abused cough medicine to get high. This trend, intentional abuse of cough syrup, is on par with cocaine in children surveyed in high school.
“What these children don’t know is that getting high on cough medicine can lead to serious complications and side effects, such as hallucinations, heart problems, vomiting, seizures, loss of consciousness, not to mention opening the door for them to try other drugs, leading to drug addiction.”
According to a CADCA survey conducted in 2006, only eight percent of parents are aware that young people are abusing cough remedies, and 75 percent don’t talk to their children about it. The children get their information from friends or via the Internet.
“As a community, we want to safeguard our young people against substance abuse,” said General Arthur Dean, Executive Director and CEO of CADCA. “While children make up only 25 percent or our national population, they represent 100 percent of our future.”
