Prescription Addiction Found To Be Fatest Growing Drug Problem U.S Faces

According to the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, prescription addiction is the fastest growing drug problem the U.S. faces. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration notes that more people abuse prescription drugs than those who are abusing cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, Ecstasy, and inhalants, combined.

Narconon Freedom Center has seen many addicts arrive addicted to prescription drugs. Prescription drugs can be quite harmful, despite the myth among some teens that they are safer because they come from a doctor or a pharmacy.  The fact is many prescription drugs are just as damaging as illegal drugs or street drugs. Prescriptions drugs taken improperly can result in death. Even drugs such as Viagra have side effects noted such as stroke and heart attack.

It's hard to imagine the FDA allowing a substance on in the marketplace which has heart failure as a side effect, however, there are many such preparations today in America where 7 million Americans are abusing prescription drugs. However, Viagra isn't your typical abused drug. Painkillers, or Opioids, now cause more drug overdose deaths than cocaine and heroin combined.

Painkillers are often abused and sadly are often not disposed of properly when the short-term need has passed. Medicine cabinets containing left over painkillers from dental surgery, injuries or other operations can be an all too easy way for a teen or adult to begin abusing or selling prescription drugs.

There are many communities that offer "take-back days" allowing one to properly dispose of prescription drugs which is probably the best way to get rid of them as improperly disposed of prescription drugs can be harmful to the environment and as many are heavy metals and contain other such toxins there is always a risk of contaminating the environment.  Trace levels of prescription drug toxins have been found in surface water, lakes, rivers and in some community water supplies according to the FDA.

Narconon points out that drugs are basically poisons. Prescription drug addiction is addressed in the same manner as street drugs at Narconon and the results of doing so are four times that of the international average. The person is able to safely overcome their addiction using the steps laid out in the training materials that help them address the issues that brought them to addiction to begin with.

The Narconon program also provides a safe and effective method of flushing the stored drug toxins out of the system using the New Life Detoxification program.  This same program has been successful in detoxing 911 rescue workers and thereby restoring them to good health. The benefit to a drug addict, whether prescription drugs or street drugs, is the cessation of cravings so real recovery can occur.

Prescription drugs can have their benefits if properly prescribed by a doctor and monitored closely. However, abused or misused they can be just as addicting and destructive as street drugs.
