The Toyota Prius, sits at the top of the list of most fuel efficient and widely available vehicles, Clocking 50 mpg combined fuel economy, this is the one on the top of most everyone’s list.

This leader in the category only trailer the Prius for fuel efficiency getting 42 mpg. Doing the math it may not make total Bottom-Line dollars and cents, but in your heart you know it is a right thing to do.

4-5. Ford Fusion Mercury Milan

The most fuel-efficient family sedan behind the Prius, at 39 mpg, The higher price reflects the added Made-In_America cost factors, but if you are true to the Red White and Blue the Ford products may be for you. The Fusion Hybrid was named North American Car of the Year at the Detroit Auto Show. Oddly the Mercury badge lists for a little less than the Ford.

6. Smart Car

The Audi A3 "clean diesel" TDI gets a stated 34 mpg. While this is 10 mpg more than Audi’s gasoline powered version, it produces more pollution than a comparable gasoline engine or hybrid. While it tops this list for CO2 emissions, compared to the Prius at 3.7 tons of CO2 annually the Audi’s 6.2 tons of CO2 looks high, but compared to the Nissan or Lexus it looks much better.
