A 28-year-old woman, who was the only police officer left in the bullet-riddled northern Mexico town of Guadalupe was kidnapped by gunmen, officials said Monday.
The brave woman's abduction came barely a month after the female police chief of another city was executed by drug cartel thugs. According to Mexican law enforcement reports, a gang of 10 gunmen descended on Erika Gandara's Guadalupe, set the house and two cars on fire, and ran off with her, witnesses said.
The 28-year-old was the last cop left in the town because all of her colleagues had either been killed, or had quit in terror of being marked for death by thr drug cartels.
In November, drug runners killed Hermila Garcia Baeza, who had been the police chief of Meoqui for just a month. Her area is home to a key highway for smugglers.
Over 30,000 people have been killed across Mexico since 2006 when the government launched a crackdown on the drug trade.
