Maine Ski Lift Fails, Injures Riders
Winds today got the better of a ski lift at the Sugarloaf resort in Maine today. The lift derailed and sent skiers on the lift falling to the ground, some as far as 30 feet. Six people were injured when 5 or 6 of the chairs fell to the ground.
The lift was evacuated by the ski patrol, as there were nearly 220 riders on the lift at the time. Some of the skiers were spared more serious injury because of the recent snowfall that had accumulated on the mountain and not been groomed. None of those injured were life-threatening.
It is not knows at this time if the fall was due to wind or mechanical issues, but the lift was properly licensed and had passed inspection.
