Six people were injured and about 200 others were trapped Tuesday after a Sugarloaf Ski Resort lift derailed. A spokesman for the resort, which is located about 100 miles north of Portland, Maine, said the incident happened around 10:30 a.m. on the Spillway East Lift.
Five of the lift’s chairs fell about 30 feet to the ground. Six skiers were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment of minor injuries. An estimated 220 people were trapped in their chairs. Rescuers had the lift evacuated by noon.
The incident is being investigated by the Maine Safety Board. Wind gusts from 29 to 43 mph were reported at the time of the accident. The temperature was 12 degrees. It is unclear if the weather was a factor.
