Government Troops in Congo Pushed Back by Rebels

Democratic Republic of Congo troops in the eastern region of Kibumba have been pushed back by rebel forces loyal to General Laurent Nkunda. Those rebel forces have now set their sights on Goma, the regional capital and home to the country’s UN headquarters.

The UN headquarters came under attack just one day ago after civilians tossed stones at the building in frustration with what they say has been a lack of support from the 17,000 UN peacekeepers currently in the country.

Nkunda, a former army fighter, abandoned his position and formed his own rebel force in an effort to protect the minority Tutsi population in Congo. The government has accused Rwanda of aiding Nkunda’s rebels. It was in Rwanda that nearly 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutus were slaughtered in a mass genocide carried out by Hutu militia in 1994.

With the increased violence in the country the UN is said to be preparing to evacuate foreign aid workers from some towns.
