The murder of five Chinese oil workers in Sudan has drawn strong condemnation from China who has now urged the Sudanese government to step up its efforts in protecting Chinese citizens in the country from what they call terrorists.
Earlier this month nine Chinese oil workers and two drivers were kidnapped in the oil rich region of Kordofan. The kidnapping is said to have been carried out by Darfur rebels who have been seeking a cut in the oil revenues produced in the country.
According to reports Sudanese authorities attempted to rescue the workers but five were killed while two escaped and two more remain captive.
China is one of the largest purchasers of Sudanese oil and invests heavily in the country.
