Pornographic film director Gerard Damiano, who is best known for directing the 1972 hit ‘Deep Throat,’ has died. Damiano died Saturday at Fort Myers Hospital after suffering a stroke in September. He was 80.
“He was a filmmaker and an artist and we thought of him as such. Even though we weren’t allowed to see his movies, we knew he was a moviemaker, and we were proud of that,” Gerard Damiano Jr. said of his father.
‘Deep Throat’ was shot in just six days for only $25,000. It became a mainstream box-office success and a cultural must-see.
The film also became associated with the Watergate Scandal. Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein used ‘Deep Throat’ as a nickname for their source, former FBI official W. Mark Felt. Felt’s information lead to the indictment of many of then-president Richard Nixon’s closest advisors and eventually to Nixon’s resignation.
Damiano is survived by his son and daughter.
