ESPN 2008-09 Preseason NBA Power Rankings: Celtics, Lakers Begin Season on Top
The Boston Celtics, the reigning NBA Champions, enter the preseason at No. 1 on the 2008-09 preseason NBA Power Rankings by ESPN.
The Celtics, who had the NBA’s best record (66-16) before winning the NBA Finals, head into the 2008-09 season as ESPN’s favorite to repeat. Led by “The Big 3” of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce, the Celtics maintain the majority of last season’s roster, except key reserve James Posey.
The L.A. Lakers, who lost to the Celtics in the NBA Finals, remains No. 2 as they enter the season. The Lakers, who are led by NBA MVP Kobe Bryant, will return Andrew Bynum, who missed all of the playoffs due to an injury.
The New Orleans Hornets, Cleveland Cavaliers and San Antonio Spurs round out the top five in the NBA Power Rankings.
The Milwaukee Bucks and Sacramento Kings dropped five spots, the most of any team, in the Power Rankings this season, which symbolizes that their offseason appears to have lessened their respective franchises.
The Minnesota Timberwolves, on the other hand, have moved up four spots from their position in last season’s final Power Rankings.
