Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has been sentenced to 120 days in jail. Kilpatrick was ordered to jail Tuesday afternoon and will not be eligible for early released. He will be billed for his stay at $60 per day.
Kilpatrick pleaded guilty last month to charges of obstruction of justice and pleaded no contest to assaulting a sheriff’s detective. The ex-mayor admitted that he lied about not having an affair with his chief of staff, Christine Beatty, when he testified in a 2007 civil lawsuit. Explicit text messages the couple exchanged were discovered and used in the case.
The 38-year-old, who served as mayor for nearly 7 years, will not be kept with general population in the jail. He will get 1 hour everyday out of his cell for recreation.
