Air Travel in New York Improves As Airport Runways Open

Air travel to and from New York City continued to improve Wednesday as airports were able to open runways. A Port Authority spokesman said all of the main runways at NYC’s three major airports were opened.

More than 10,000 flights have been canceled since the weekend’s massive blizzard. Although air travel seems to be getting back to normal, streets in the city remained clogged with snow. Mayor Michael Bloomberg acknowledged the city efforts to clear the snow quickly failed.

"We did not do as good a job as we wanted to do or the city has come to expect," he said Wednesday. "I cannot tell you for sure why it was a lot worse this time than other times."

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said New Yorkers “have every right to be mad” with the city’s response to the storm. Quinn said she will hold hearings on January 10 to examine cleanup efforts.
