A gas leak is believed to have caused a family-owned furniture store in Wayne, Michigan to explode Wednesday morning around 9 o’clock. Paul Franks, the owner of the store, was pulled from the rubble and is in critical condition. Authorities say two people remain missing. Rescuers continue to sift through debris looking for the missing.
“They’re dealing with a lot of debris. They’ve got to be careful so they don’t cause any more explosions. You don’t know if there are any other flammables in there,” said Inkster Deputy Police Chief Hilton Napoleon.
Consumers Energy spokeswoman Debra Dodd said crews were investigating a gas leak when the store exploded. A gas main was shut off after the blast. “We’re pretty sure natural gas is involved (in the explosion),” Dodd said.
Homes and businesses near the store were evacuated as firefighters got the situation under control.
