Not since the 1960’s has overdose been so prevalent across all age groups, with some statistics showing rates rising nearly ten times from what they were just 50 years ago.
“Drug use leading to overdose is obviously a huge problem within the United States,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside
Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “If you were to take an impromptu survey of professionals within the addiction treatment field, it is nearly certain that most would agree that this trend is largely related to the widespread availability of prescription narcotics. With more and more people being prescribed narcotics for pain, the more chance there is for those same medications to show up on the street and into the hands of an addicted individual. The risk of addiction from pain medications is high, but it’s difficult to convey that to a patient who struggles with chronic pain. What other options do they really have? That’s why it’s so important for prescribers to emphasize the dangers of taking too much medication. If an individual is finding that their pain medication is not as effective as it once was, they should speak with their doctor instead of increasing the dose themselves, which can result in an overdose.”
The greatest proportion of overdoses occurs in people in their 40’s and 50’s. In addition, that particular age group, which includes the last of the baby boomers, is where the most significant changes in overdose rates over time appeared. In the late 1960’s about 1 in every 100,000 Caucasian woman in their early 50’s died from accidental overdose. In 2007, that rate increased to 15 out of every 100,000.
