Dianne Wilkerson, Mass. State Senator, Arrested by FBI on Corruption Charges

Massachusetts State Senator Dianne Wilkerson (D-Roxbury) was arrested Tuesday on corruption charges by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Wilkerson, 54, was arrested after an extensive 18-month sting operation run by FBI agents. She was caught with $6,000 with cash when she was busted.

Wilkerson has not yet been indicted by a grand jury, and therefore was not required to tender a plea. If convicted, however, she faces up to 40 years in prison. She was released her on a $50,000 bond.

FBI and Boston police accused Wilkerson of taking $23,500 in bribes and abusing her seat of power to manipulate legislation. Wilkerson faces charges of attempted extortion and theft of honest services as a state senator.

Wilkerson took $8,500 in cash payments from an undercover agent and a cooperating witness to assist in obtaining a nontransferable liquor license for the proposed Dejavu nightclub in Roxbury.

Wilkerson also allegedly used one $1,000 bribe to treat herself to a night of gambling and dining at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut.

Wilkerson has faced several scandals over her 15-year career. She also spent time in a halfway house for federal income-tax evasion and narrowly escaped home foreclosure.

Wilkerson graduated from American International College in Springfield, MA, earned a law degree from Boston College and was sworn in as the state's first female black senator in 1993.

Wilkerson lost the 2008 Democratic primary for her seat to Sonia Chang-Diaz, but has launched a write-in campaign. Chang-Diaz is undergoing an complaint from the state's Ethics Commission that was filed this week after falsely reporting that she was endorsed by the Spanish-language newspaper El Mundo.
