Denmark's Princess Mary will give birth early.

The Crown Princess of Denmark - who is expecting twins with her husband Crown Prince Frederik  has canceled all royal engagements to prepare for the early arrival of her babies.

The twin tots were originally due in mid-January, but now an imminent delivery will take place at University Hospital in Copenhagen, according to newspaper Billet Bladet.

Mary and her husband broke royal tradition by staying at home in Amalienborg Palace over Christmas to be near the hospital instead of going on their annual trip to Schackenborg Manor with Queen Margrethe, Prince Henrik and the rest of the family.

The Danish palace has also confirmed Mary will not take part in a traditional New Year reception held at Christiansborg Palace in central Copenhagen.

Danish reporter Ulrik Ulriksen has said anticipation is building in the nation, and Princess Mary must now rest until the twins arrive.

She explained: "It is best that in the Christmas month she stays close to the hospital maternity ward where Dr. Morten Hedegaard, midwife Birgitte Hillerup and the rest of the birth team is ready to accept."
