Dozens Killed in Somalia after Wave of Car Bombs Strike Somaliland

Dozens have people have been killed in the northern territory of Somalia after a series of car bombs targeting government and UN workers ripped through the capital city of Hargeisa in Somaliland. Early reports have put the number of dead at 29 but that could still rise.

The car bombings took place at the same time two suicide bombers killed six intelligence agents working in Puntland, just to the east of Somaliland.

The attacks in Hargeisa occurred around the presidential palace, Ethiopian consulate and UN offices and shocked many who had grown accustomed to the relative peace in the area. According to reports security guards at the presidential palace opened fire on one vehicle before it was able to get through the gates while another vehicle managed to get to the UNDP building before detonating the explosive. The attackers also struck the Ethiopian consulate where at least eight people were killed from an explosion.

While there have been no claims of responsibility for the attacks many believe Islamic insurgents carried out the attacks in Somaliland and Puntland. Somaliland has tried to break from Somalia and has allied themselves with the U.S. in an effort to end the presence of Islamic militants in Somalia
