Fighting in Democratic Republic of Congo Intensifies as Thousands Flee

The fighting between Tutsi rebels and Congolese army troops has intensified and resulted in thousands of people flooding into the city of Goma seeking shelter from the violence.

Army soldiers have retreated from positions in the northern territory of Kibumba and settled in Goma as well causing many inside the city to panic, fearing an all-out war could leave them in the middle of the action.

The United Nations has 17,000 peacekeeping troops in the Congo and there has been a call for reinforcements as the conflict continues to escalate.

Tutsi rebels loyal to General Laurent Nkunda have pressed the Hutu militia which they claim have tried to further suppress the minority Tutsis in the community. Many inside Congo have accused Rwanda of backing the Tutsi rebels but that claim has been strongly denied by the Rwandan government.
