Tutsi Rebel Leader Declares Ceasefire in Congo, Urges Government to Lay Down Arms

Gen. Laurent Nkunda, leader of a Tutsi rebel group that has clashed with Congolese military troops for the past three days, has declared a ceasefire and urged the government to do the same.

Over the past few days thousands of people fled from the northern territory of Kimbumba to Goma as the rebel forces continued to advance. After engaging with the rebel forces on Wednesday, several military troops retreated from Kimbumba to Goma and that led to widespread concerns among those who had fled to the city for safety.

Nkunda called for a ceasefire after noticing what he told the BBC was “a state of destabilization in the town (Goma).” The general, a former military officer in the Congolese army, has said his only interest is in protecting the minority community of Tutsi.
