Remote Backup Systems, the founder of the Online Backup industry, today announced the release of RBackup version 10.1, which is capable of running in Amazon’s recently out-of-beta Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2).
Amazon’s EC2 provides a robust and affordable framework for hosting RBackup servers from 25 clients to hundreds of thousands. The framework can be scaled as needed to support increasing client counts and increased storage space needs.
“Our Service Providers asked us to come up with a solution to the problems inherent in their rapidly expanding businesses – how to scale up affordably as their customers increased along with their storage needs,” explained
Remote Backup Systems supports 8,400 online backup service providers with software, services, and consulting. Founded in 1985, the company developed and published the first remote backup software and defined the basic RBS protocol used around the world.
“Most of our Service Providers will probably stick with their own data centers and hardware,” said Cosgrove, “but for many of them, especially the ones just starting out, EC2 provides a lower cost of entry, with a much quicker startup.”
RBS provides an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) that fully installs a complete RBS Server on Amazon, complete with Windows 2003 Server, SQL Server, and the RBS Server software. The result is a fully operational RBS Server online and ready to use in less than 10 minutes.
