Dave and Stacy begin the episode by discussing Peralta's history as a filmmaker, skateboarder, and surfer, and the difficulties that went into creating the documentary "Dogtown & Z-Boys". According to Peralta, the documentary, which chronicles the history of the Z-Boys in Santa Monica, ultimately required the services of a detective who was used to track down specific people throughout the city who had various pieces of lost footage. They then discuss Peralta's newest documentary, "Made in America", for an introspective conversation about LA's gang problem, the effect it has on the people involved, and what needs to be done to solve it. Both Stacy and Skipp explain that the gang violence in Los Angeles will not be solved using police force. Using a quote from football star Jim Brown, Stacy points out "if police could solve the problem it would have been solved already". Stacy and Skipp believe instead that the factors surrounding the gang problem in LA will not go away until there is more of an effort by people like themselves to make a difference. As Skipp Townsend explains, "these are the only people who gang members will listen to and respect".
