Portland Trail Blazers' Greg Oden Out 2-4 Weeks for Ankle Sprain

Portland Trail Blazers rookie center Greg Oden is out 2-4 weeks after suffering an ankle sprain in his debut on Tuesday.

Oden suffered the injury during the first quarter of the Blazers' 96-76 season-opening loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night. He continued to play on it for several minutes until being benched.

Oden missed all four field goal attempts and two free throws in his 13 minutes of play.

The team said Wednesday that MRI and computerized axial tomography scans confirmed Oden has a mid-lateral foot sprain.

Oden, the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, missed the entire 2007-08 season due to his recovery from microfracture knee surgery.

Oden is expected to miss six to 14 games. Over that span, he was expected to go up against Tim Duncan (San Antonio Spurs); Shaquille O'Neal and Amare Stoudemire (Phoenix Suns); Carlos Boozer (Utah Jazz); Yao Ming (Houston Rockets); Al Jefferson and fellow rookie Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves); and Dwight Howard (Orlando Magic).

In one season at Ohio State, Oden averaged 15.7 points and 9.6 rebounds, but he struggled with a wrist injury early in the season. He led the Buckeyes to the national championship game, scoring 25 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in the loss to Florida.
