Tyler Hansbrough, Stephen Curry Lead YourFindit Preseason All-American Team

by Kyle "Scoop" Yeldell

North Carolina forward Tyler Hansbrough leads the 2008-09 YourFindit preseason college basketball All-American team.

Hansbrough, the unanimous AP and Naismith Player of the Year, returns to the Tar Heels for his senior season after leading UNC to the Final Four. Hansbrough averaged 22.6 points and 10.2 rebounds per game last season for the 36-3 Tar Heels, the winningest season in the school’s storied history.

Hansbrough can become the all-time leading scorer in North Carolina history with 103 points, and the ACC’s all-time leading scorer with 602 points.

While Hansbrough entered the NCAA tournament a household name, the tournament created one in Davidson’s Stephen Curry, who joins Hansbrough on the YourFindit All-American team.

Curry, the Southern Conference Player of the Year and Tournament MVP, led Davidson to a 20-0 conference record and took them to the Elite Eight, while averaging 32 points per game in the NCAA Tournament.

Curry averaged 25.9 points, 2.9 assists and 2.0 steals per game last season, while setting an NCAA record for most three-pointers in a single-season with 162.

UCLA’s Darren Collison joins Curry in the backcourt after leading the Bruins to its third consecutive Final Four. Collison averaged 14.5 points, 3.8 assists and 1.8 steals per game last season, while shooting an amazing 52.5 percent (53-of-101) from 3-point range.

Blake Griffin (Oklahoma) and Luke Harangody (Notre Dame) round out the frontcourt of the 2008-09 preseason All-American team.

Griffin led the Sooners in scoring (14.7 ppg), rebounding (9.1 rpg) and field-goal percentage (56.8) last season as a freshman. All three statistics ranked him in the top 10 in the Big 12, helping to earn him All-Big 12 honors.

Harangody, the Big East Player of the Year, averaged 20.4 points and 10.6 rebounds. He one of just four players in the Big Six conferences to average more than 20 points and 10 rebounds last season. He helped to lead Notre Dame to a 25-8 record, its best in years.

Ty Lawson (UNC), James Harden (Arizona State), Tyler Smith (Tennessee), Hasheem Thabeet (UConn) and Patrick Patterson (Kentucky) were selected for the All-American Second Team.

Lawson, one of the quickest players in the nation, averaged 12.7 points, 5.2 assists (third in the ACC) and 1.6 steals per game last season and had an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.36-1 to lead the conference.

Harden was one of the most consistent players in the uber-talented freshman class last season. In addition, he helped Arizona State go from just two Pac-10 wins to nine. He led the Sun Devils in scoring (17.8 ppg) and was second in rebounding (5.3) and assists (3.2), and was listed on the All-Pac 10 First Team.

Smith was a key part in the rejuvenation of the Tennessee Volunteers program last season, who were ranked as high as #2 in the AP Top 25. Smith lead the team in rebounding (6.7) and assists (3.4) and third in scoring (13.4 ppg) and steals (1.4). His game-winning shot against then-No. 1 Memphis gave the Tigers its only regular-season loss and catapulted them into the national spotlight.

Thabeet is arguably the nation’s top defensive player, ranking third last season in the nation in blocks (4.5 bpg), blocking at least three shots in 26 of UConn’s 33 games. He is one of the sole reasons why UConn enters the season ranked #2 in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll.

Patterson was the best player on the storied Kentucky Wildcats program last season as a much-hyped freshman. Patterson led UK with 16.4 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, and ranked fifth in the SEC in field-goal percentage (57%).
