A 2009 study recently published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration shows that non-heroin drug abuse in the United States is highest within the New England states of the country.
Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont were among the states with the highest abuse rates, with Maine topping the list.
“Admission rates for painkiller abuse rose over the nation,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside
Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center, a leading New England substance abuse treatment facility. “But, the highest rates of increase were seen within the New England states, particularly Maine. Since 2000, when the availability and effectiveness of such heavy-duty narcotics like Oxycontin and Fentnyl were discovered, abuse rates have skyrocketed. This is a red alert to clinicians to be vigilant in closely monitoring narcotic prescription use among their patients. Some New England states have a prescription monitoring program which tracks when an individual has a narcotic prescription filled. This measure is effective in helping doctors identify individuals who may be doctor shopping and getting multiple narcotics prescriptions filled. By sharing this information, doctors can take action to insure that they don’t fall prey to a drug abuser who is looking for an easy narcotic prescription.”
