The cliché: “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” certainly applies in the most recent study published by Dr. Amy M. Yule and contributor Dr. Timothy Wilens, a speaker for the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Their newest study shows that substance abuse by a mother significantly increases the risk of her children developing the same drug abuse problem.
“Often times, drug use studies with regard to mothers, center around substance abuse during pregnancy,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside
Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Rarely are studies done which target mothers who abuse drugs around their minor children which is unfortunate, because common sense would indicate that such drug use would be influential and detrimental to their children. This research highlights the necessity for doctors to conduct a proper family history assessment, looking for any signs of drug use within the home so that early intervention can take place to insure that the children in the home don’t replicate the mistakes of the mother.”
Dr. Yule’s and Dr. Wilens’ study indicated that the risk of developing the same type of drug abuse problem was seven time greater for girls who were exposed to their mother’s drug use. The study recommended that pediatricians and other physicians begin screening for parental drug use by the time a child enters the fifth grade, although most children do not begin using drugs until age 12 or older.
