New Year’s Eve produces high numbers of underage drinking

Underage drinking increased on New Year's Eve

A recently released study published by The Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology shows that in 2009, the number of minors treated in the ER on New Year’s Day for drinking was four times the normal daily average.

“Often times, we neglect thinking about minors on New Year’s Eve because we think of it as an ‘adult holiday’,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Instead, that’s the first age group we should be thinking about. Parents, community leaders and all adults involved in a minor’s life should see this study as a wake-up call to the pitfalls of minors using alcohol, and the bad effects of alcohol use such as auto accidents, injuries and even accidental death, especially at this time of year. If it’s not alarming enough that minors are entering the emergency room due to alcohol consumption, it’s even more alarming to realize that behaviors such as these often lead to other risky behaviors. Open lines of communication as well as proper role modeling by parents, clergy, teachers – in fact, any adult in a minor’s life - is crucial, year-round.”

During the period from Christmas to New Year’s Day, historical data indicates that two to three times more people die in alcohol-related automobile accidents during this period than any other time of the year. Data also shows that 40% of all holiday fatalities involve a driver who is driving under the influence of alcohol. In addition, New Year’s Day emergency room visits were one-third higher than any other national holiday in the United States.
