The FDA recently requested a Darvocet and
Darvon recall after reviewing new information which showed that the drugs put patients at risk for serious heart rhythm abnormalities. The information indicated that even when taken in proper dosages, propoxyphene can significantly impact the electrical activity of the heart; this can increase the risk of serious abnormal heart rhythms, which have been associated with sudden death and other adverse events. As a result of this data, the FDA found that the drug’s pain-relieving benefits no longer outweighed its risks. On Nov. 19, 2010, the FDA announced that Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals agreed to issue the Darvon and Darvocet recall.
The serious side effects of Darvocet and Darvon are not limited to heart problems, however. The FDA has received more than 3000 reports of Darvocet and
Darvon side effects, including suicide, drug dependence and overdose. In July 2009, the FDA took several actions, including the addition of a Darvon black box warning, to reduce the risk of overdoses in patients taking Darvon, Darvocet and other propoxyphene- containing products.
