A virus known as the “Sinowal trojan” has been blamed for the theft of information pertaining to more than 500,000 bank accounts, credit cards and debit cards across the globe.
The Sinowal trojan virus has targeted hundreds of thousands of financial institutions, gathering online usernames and passwords of bankers as well as other sensitive information pertaining to banking accounts.
Sinowal was first detected in early 2006 and has since hit accounts in countries including Australia, the UK and U.S. The trojan virus infects computers through a “drive-by download” method that has undergone constant updates by its creators.
Making the virus all the more damaging is the fact a computer can become infected just by visiting a site that has the Sinowal code on it. According to experts many of those sites have positioned links within high-traffic sites, attracting the largest amount of browsers. Social networking sites that generate a large amount of traffic are particularly popular.
Experts have stressed computer users should be careful about what site sthey link to when visiting high-traffic sites.
While Russia and Eastern Europe have been noted as a possible origin for the Sinowal trojan investigators have yet to pinpoint exactly who is behind the virus.
