Kenny Boynton, Nation's Top 10 HS Player, Commits to Florida Gators

Kenny Boynton, one of the nation's top 10 high school basketball players, committed to the Florida Gators on Thursday night after months of speculation.

Boynton, the nation's #7 prospect in Rivals.com's top 150, held officially visits with USC and Georgia Tech along with Florida before cancelling official visits to Duke and Texas.

"It's been a long process and I've been blessed by God to be recruited by some of the best coaches in America," Boynton said in a televised broadcast of his announcement. "But I can't go to all the schools, and I have to choose one. I'm going to be a Florida Gator."

Last Saturday, Boynton went on his official visit to Florida and watched the Gators' football team defeat Kentucky in Gainesville. Soon thereafter, he made his official commitment.

Boynton, a 6-foot-2, 187-pound guard from American Heritage School (Plantation, FL), is ranked the #2 shooting guard in the nation behind Xavier Henry, a 6-foot-6 guard from Putnam City (Oklahoma City, OK). He is ranked #13 in the ESPNU Top 100.

Boynton has long been considered one of the nation's best scorers. Last season, Boynton poured in a career-high 61 points in a victory against Dunbar (Fort Myers, FL).

Boynton averaged 34.5 points as a junior to lead Florida in scoring for the second consecutive season and was named to the Parade All-American team.

During his sophomore year at Blanche Ely, Boynton averaged 31.7 points and led the Tigers to the 6A state title. In the summer AAU circuit, he has led Team Breakdown to consecutive U-17 national championships, along with highly-touted junior Brandon Knight, who is ranked in the top 10 in the class of 2010.

Boynton is the third piece of UF head coach Billy Donovan's 2009 recruiting class. Erik Murphy, a 6-foot-10, 220-pound forward from Southborough, MA and Deshawn Painter, a 6-9, 210-pound forward currently playing at the Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, VA, both gave verbal commitments to Florida. All three are expected to sign their letters-of-intent in November.

Many believe Boynton and Florida sophomore Nick Calathes will be one of the nation's best backcourts instantly next season.
