Searchers have found skeletal remains believed to be those of Steve Fossett. The remains were found with a pair of tennis shoes, credit cards and Fossett’s Illinois driver’s license.
“Pending DNA results, I believe our coroner’s investigation is over and the Fossett family will finally have closure,” said Madera County Sheriff John Anderson said.
Fossett’s plane wreckage was found earlier this month after hiker Preston Morrow found pilots licenses bearing the adventures name and cash in the High Sierras.
The 63-year-old disappeared in September 2007 after taking off from a Nevada Ranch in a single-engine plane. He was declared legally dead in February after no clues to his whereabouts were discovered. The National Transportation Safety Board is examining the plane wreckage to determine the cause of the crash.
