Spilled Coffee Sparks Hijacking Emergency Code on United Airlines Flight

A spilled cup of coffee caused all sorts of troubled on a United Airlines flight this week. Different emergency codes, including a hijacking code, were triggered after the pilot of Flight 940, which was carrying 225 passengers from Chicago to Frankfurt, Germany, accidentally spilled a cup of coffee on the communication equipment.

The accident caused the flight to be diverted to Toronto, Canada. The plane landed safely at Pearson International Airport around 10 o’clock Monday night.

United Airlines has released few details on what led to the diversion. Spokesman Rahsaan Johnson refused to confirm spilled coffee was the culprit. “Our review of the communications issue encountered on flight 940 continues, so it's too soon to comment on any particulars that led to the captain's decision to divert," Johnson said Tuesday.

Passengers of flight 940 were sent back to Chicago to board another plane to Frankfurt on Tuesday.
