Former South African President Thabo Mbeki has denied reports that he would campaign for the ruling African National Congress during next year’s elections. Mbeki was essentially forced to resign by the ANC following allegations that he interfered with a case involving Jacob Zuma.
Zuma had defeated Mbeki for the party’s leadership position late last year and is widely expected to take the presidential post in the 2009 elections.
Earlier this year Zuma was facing charges of corruption but a judge suggested that Mbeki may have interfered with the trial.
Mbeki strongly denied the allegations yet he felt the pressure of the ANC to step down. Despite ousting Mbeki as president the ANC still believed he would be campaigning for the party, something Mbeki has no plans to do.
