AP Top 25 College Football Scores: Northwestern Wildcats Stun #20 Minnesota Golden Gophers with Last Second Interception

Mike Kafka was 12/16 passing for 143 yards and two touchdowns and added 217 yards rushing, Jeremy Ebert had three receptions for 48 yards and a TD and Brendan Smith picked off Adam Weber and returned it 48 yards for a touchdown with 12 seconds left in the game to give the Northwestern Wildcats (7-2, 3-2) a 24-17 victory over the #20 Minnesota Golden Gophers (7-2, 3-2) in a Big Ten showdown.

Northwestern grabbed a 10-0 lead in the first quarter on a Kafka to Ebert 36-yard touchdown toss and a 34-yard field goal from Amado Villarreal but the Golden Gophers climbed back in the second quarter as Weber hit Eric Decker on a 7-yard TD pass and then Traye Simmons intercepted Kafka and returned it 23 yards for a score and Minnesota pulled in front 14-10.

Kafka made up for the pick with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Josh Rooks later in the second but Joel Monroe provided the equalizer for Minnesota with a 21-yard field goal to put the game at 17-17 at half.

While the first half featured offense the second half was dominated by the defenses of each team and it was the Northwestern squad that turned that into points as Smith snagged the errant Weber pass and returned it 48-yards for the winning score with 12 seconds left on the clock.

Northwestern will host Ohio State next week while Minnesota has Michigan at home.
