Maryland State Employees Injured By Incendiary Devices in Mail

Authorities say two employees of Maryland state offices suffered burns after opening packages containing incendiary devices. The rectangle shaped packages were about the size of a book and released a flash of fire, smoke and sulfur when they were opened. They did not contain explosives.

One of the packages was addressed to Governor Martin O’Malley and sent to the Jeffrey Building while the other was addressed to the Department of Transportation and sent to DOT headquarters near Hanover. Both buildings were evacuated after the incident.

Federal, state and local authorities are investigating. "There are a lot of questions yet to be answered," said Maryland State Police spokesman Greg Shipley.
