Rupiah Banda of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy has been sworn in as Zambia’s newest president, moving from acting head of state to the official office following the announcement of his narrow victory over Michael Sata in the country’s recent presidential election.
Sata has contested the results of the election which declared Banda the winner- 40.1 percent to 38.1 percent. The opposition Patriotic Front leader declared “a bunch of thieves” had stolen the election and he would demand a recount.
Despite Sata’s cries of fraud election monitors had declared Thursday’s vote free and fair and saw no evidence of intimidation.
Banda had served under President Levy Mwanawasa who died in August following a stroke.
